Product Details

“Pinto, from: 100 Years Ago” is a colour etching created between 2000 and 2001. This piece is part of Doig’s “100 Years Ago” series, which comprises eight etchings exploring themes of memory and landscape. “Pinto”, Doig depicts a solitary horse standing in a serene, open field, evoking a sense of stillness and contemplation. Doig’s use of etching techniques and his focus on atmospheric landscapes contribute to the dreamlike quality characteristic of his work. Doig has mentioned, “I never try to create real spaces—only painted spaces. That’s all I am interested in. That’s all I can do.” This emphasis on creating painted spaces rather than replicating reality is evident in the ethereal and contemplative nature of “Pinto”, where the landscape transcends literal representation to become a vessel for personal interpretation and memory.

“ I am interested in how a painting can suggest something that is not actually there. „
