In Conversation With Peter Benda… Founder & CEO Of Royal Bee Design
1. Royal Bee Design focuses on handcrafted marble accessories that combine function with visual impact; how can small scale details like trays, tissue boxes, and bathroom sets elevate the perceived luxury of hotel guestrooms and public spaces?
In upscale and luxury hospitality, the perception of luxury is very often defined by detail, by materials, by touch, and by the overall sensory experience of the space.
While architecture and large-scale elements set the foundation, it is the smaller, more intimate objects such as trays, tissue boxes or bathroom sets that guests interact with on a daily basis. These moments of contact are where the experience becomes personal.
Well-designed, handcrafted pieces made from natural materials like stone bring a certain weight, authenticity and visual calm into the space. They don’t try to dominate the room, but rather elevate it quietly through proportion, texture and presence.
At the same time, these objects introduce a sense of timelessness. Instead of following short term trends, they age with the space and contribute to a more lasting identity of the interior.
Ultimately, luxury is not just about how a space looks, it’s about how it feels. And it is often these small-scale details that shape that feeling the most.
2. Your work is rooted in natural stone and material integrity; how do you guide hoteliers in selecting the right marble types, colours, and finishes to align with their brand identity and interior concept?
Our work is always guided by the overall concept of the project. Material selection, colours and finishes are not isolated decisions, they need to respond to the identity of the space.
In most cases, we begin by understanding the visual direction the client is aiming for. Based on that, we suggest suitable materials; whether marble, travertine or onyx, along with the right tone, veining and finish.
Sometimes we collaborate closely with designers and architects; other times we are approached directly by clients. In those cases, our role becomes more advisory, helping translate an idea into a material solution that feels coherent and intentional.
Ultimately, it comes down to sensitivity. Choosing the right stone is not just a technical decision, but a design one, it needs to align with the atmosphere the space is trying to create.
3. Many of your pieces are bespoke or custom made; can you explain your process from concept development through to production, and how you collaborate with designers and operators on hospitality projects?
While we offer a small home collection with ready-to-order designs, the majority of our work is bespoke. Each hospitality project is unique, and the objects within it need to respond to that specific context, in both form and material.
Our process begins with understanding the concept and the client’s requirements. In many cases, we collaborate directly with architects or interior designers, often during the design or mock-up stage, to develop pieces that align with the overall vision.
We either produce based on detailed specifications provided by the design team, or take a more active design role ourselves, proposing shapes, proportions and material combinations that fit the project. Having worked with a wide range of stones and custom pieces, we can build on existing references or create something entirely new.
Once the design direction is defined, we move into material selection and prototyping. Producing physical samples is a key part of the process, allowing the client to evaluate the piece in real space and light conditions, something difficult to fully assess from drawings alone.
After final approval, we proceed to production, followed by detailed quality control, and finally delivery to the project site.
4. With each marble piece being naturally unique in veining and tone, how do you balance consistency across multiple rooms or properties while still celebrating the individuality that makes stone such a desirable luxury material?
The beauty of natural stone lies in its individuality, no two pieces are ever exactly the same, and that is precisely what makes it such a desirable luxury material.
At the same time, in hospitality projects, a certain level of consistency is essential. Our approach is to balance both.
Once the design and initial sample are approved, we carefully select the raw material for the full production. Wherever possible, we work from the same block or stones with very similar characteristics, ensuring consistency in tone and overall appearance across all pieces.
We also involve clients in this stage by sharing images of the selected slabs or blocks prior to production, ensuring full transparency and alignment.
This way, each piece remains unique in its veining and detail, while the overall collection feels cohesive within the space.
In the end, it’s not about eliminating variation, but about controlling it, allowing the material to express itself within a defined aesthetic direction.
