Hotels Are Rethinking the Modern Kids Club
For family travellers, the quality of a hotel’s facilities for younger guests can play a major role in choosing where to stay. As family holidays become an increasingly important part of the hospitality market, hotels are giving more thought to how their kids clubs and family spaces are designed.
The traditional idea of a kids club as a brightly coloured room filled with toys is starting to change. Hotels are creating spaces that feel more considered, with thoughtful layouts, durable materials and activities that encourage children to explore, create and socialise.
Flexibility is particularly important. A well planned kids club needs to accommodate different ages and activities throughout the day. Areas for creative projects, games, reading and quieter activities can help make the space useful for a wider range of children rather than focusing on one particular age group.
The design can also reflect the identity of the hotel. A coastal resort might draw inspiration from the surrounding landscape, while a countryside property could incorporate natural materials and references to the local environment. This creates a stronger connection between the children’s facilities and the wider hotel.
Durability is, of course, essential. Surfaces and furniture need to cope with enthusiastic use, regular cleaning and the demands of a busy environment. But practical materials do not have to mean compromising on appearance. There are plenty of ways to create attractive spaces while choosing products that can withstand everyday use.
Safety also needs to sit at the heart of the design. Clear sightlines, suitable storage and carefully planned circulation can help staff supervise children while keeping the environment easy to navigate. Accessibility should be considered too, ensuring that facilities can be enjoyed by as many children as possible.
Outdoor areas can provide another dimension where space allows. Gardens, play areas and covered spaces can give children opportunities to spend time outside, while allowing the indoor club to focus on creative or quieter activities.
Technology can have a role, but it does not need to dominate. Hotels can combine digital activities with traditional games, books, crafts and hands on experiences. The aim is to provide variety rather than simply creating another space centred around screens.
For parents, the value of a well designed kids club goes beyond keeping children occupied. It can give adults an opportunity to enjoy other parts of the hotel knowing that their children are somewhere engaging, comfortable and appropriately supervised.
As hotels continue to cater to families with increasingly varied expectations, children’s facilities are becoming a more important part of the overall property. A thoughtfully designed kids club can support the family experience while giving hotels another opportunity to show attention to detail across every part of the guest journey.
